Fishes of Oklahoma exhibit in the Oklahoma Aquarium |
As we entered the Oklahoma Aquarium, all eight galleries are situated along a huge central corridor. Some to the left, some to the right but it is easy to see everything in any order! We started our visit at the feeding tank for the red ear sliders in the Fishes of Oklahoma gallery, third gallery on the left.
Just next to it there is a booth that will sell food and distribute feeding stick while supplies last. For $2 you get three strips of carrot to feed. I saw complaints about this, but being the husband of a biologist I understand their need to budget and plan the feeding of the turtles. Too much food can be dangerous, even unhealthy for the veracious turtles. Also, the money is going to the aquarium and is well used.
On the tip of the feeding stick is a wooden clothespin. Clip the very end of a strip to the stick and hold it just above the water's surface. In mere seconds you will attract friendly turtles, feeding from what ever is in reach. With that in mind, I would not stick my fingers in there. Slider bites are not bad, but the little kids seemed scared of the experience.
For the fans of Red Ear Sliders or turtles in general, this is fun! The turtles are native to the rivers and lakes of south central USA. They are typically kept as pets, but before getting a turtle as a pet, be sure to educate yourself.
